Visiting the Western Australian Maritime Museum we listen to a staff member regale stories of the sea and explain some of the unique galleries which enhance the tales. The Museum is also the home to the winning America’s Cup yacht, Australia II. There will be free time this afternoon so we can wander through the markets and purchase lunch. We have planned a “Behind Bars” tour at the Fremantle Prison this  afternoon. As we step inside to explore the prison we learn of its convict origins in the 1850’s until its closure as a maximum security gaol in 1991. We are in for a very interesting day! Our touring takes us north to the historical village of Guildford. Now considered a “suburb” of Perth, Guildford was one of three towns established during the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829. Perth was the administration centre, Fremantle the port and Guildford the market town. Today Guildford is one of only two towns in Perth on the National Trust register and many fine colonial buildings from the township’s earliest days continue to grace the streets. Our next stop is the fascinating town of New Norcia. It was here that the Spanish Benedictine monks established a monastery as an Aboriginal mission; it is now one of the great cultural heritage sites of Australia. We enjoy a tour of the town then lunch at the New Norcia Hotel, which originally opened as a hostel in 1927 to accommodate parents of the children who were boarding at the town’s colleges. We then visit the amazing Museum & Art Gallery which contains one of the finest collections of movable heritage in Australia. As we drive towards the coast, we’ll drive through the Badgingarra National Park to experience the spring wildflowers in bloom. Our overnight accommodation is in the fishing village of Cervantes. (Breakfast and dinner in hotel, Lunch at New Norcia Hotel)

We’ll take an easy stroll through some special places in this beautiful panorama, where we can appreciate the brilliantly sculptured limestone monoliths  of  nature’s  handiwork.
